We added the lights for effect. Worked out great. You must use common sense and assembly experience to assemble. The instructions are very confusing but for the money it is a great deal. Make sure you have it very square before screwing the top planks down. You will know if your not because the screws will have nothing to screw into. Most important is to make sure you use the longer piece that would be used at the head of the bed with it's black finished side facing the foot of the bed. Took a bit longer than I would have expected first time out.The bed seems ok to sleep on for a year. Not for college, not for life.I gave it a 3/5 because:1) Steps #3 and #4 do not indicate where the long and short "L"-named boards have to go.. Why is this? its because youll have an issue with the amount of holes, plastic dowels and screws.2)The BOARDS are not labeled. According to the manual ALL BOARDS must be labeled: B1 (2),B (1),H (2),L2 (2),and L1 (2), for a total of 9 Boards... GUESS WHAT? I only had 2 labeled boards. But then again they are easy to identify. The only boards that shouldve been properly identified were the small "L" boards because you actually do not know where they go (and this a brainer because there are 8 holes in each board rather than just 4.)THIS was done by South Shore because they knew they had messed up with the hole markings. Things didn't match-up correctly. If they would've been smart, they would've labeled some Side boards with symbols such as and umbrella (showing if its upright or not) and "Front or BACK" for the short-side boards.3)One of the large B-Boards (where you rest down), was not properly drilled and they used some sort of resin to fix it up. PREPOSTEROUS! (see pictures)4)The other L boards (the front and back) were drilled down 8 times on each: Total 16 holes!... 4 of them you actually need per board.. And you only need 2 plastic dowels and not 4 on each board because they other holes don't match up.While trying to use all 4 dowels on each board, you could easily see that they did not match properly because the board was actually either 1inch too high or too low, depending on how you place it. This created an elevation on the bed. Elevations do not go here people: According to the manual everything is supposed to be flat. And this is the reason why they added all the holes so that you could waste 3 hours trying to figure out what the heck was going on....5)The Z-01 piece, appears on the picture to be adjacent to a board. I used it as an ANGLE-tool. Turns out that's what its for.Discard after use.6)The corner protectors... nice but the adhesive didn't work. All the sticky glue peeled of from the paper. Useless. Use other type of adhesive.Item was delivered on time. After sleeping one day in it. I cant complain. I would suggest putting some sort of cushion under the mattress, ie carpet-leftover. I would definitely suggest a pillow-top mattress for a good sleep. These run about $170 dollars on some mattress company.Overall 3/5. $60 would have been a good price for the hassle.I bought three of these (yes, three!). I just moved and needed some simple beds for my kids and I. I am a female in my mid 30's and not very strong. I put all three together by myself! Very easy to assemble! The first one went together fine. I followed the directions step by step, and had no trouble. I was careful aligning the top panels to the bottom frame. I think I was a little too confident on the second bed, because one of the screws did not line up with the bottom frame. I had tried to line the panels up correctly, but after tightening a lot of the screws, one lined up oustide the frame. I left that one out, since there were about 18 total, and I thought 17 would be fine for my 4 year old's bed. I also didn't want to take them all out again, since that may wear away at the holes I had just made. One screw lined up crooked and started to chip the frame, but it was so close to the platform that it is hardly noticeable, and I just tilted it to go in a little more toward the center. The rest went together fine. Those glue strips for the edge pieces are annoying, but I just did my best with them. While assembling the third bed, I was more careful with the panels. Again, they did not line up, so I decided to switch them to opposite sides-- that solved the problem! The third bed went together fine. I noticed some of the same issues that other reviewers had noticed-- the wood platform shows on the sides. Until I can paint it black, I just left the comforter out hanging around the side of the bed to cover it up. But I agree- painting it would be nice. It is not a high quality wood, but I did not expect that for the price. I think for a simple bed, it works great! I noticed a few tiny chips or dents in the corners, and one of my panels has a dent in it (probably from delivery), but it works fine, so I didn't worry about it. All three arrived very quickly, and I put all three together within 3-4 hours. For a simple bed at a great price, I highly recommend it!We believe wood plate bed is healthy and this bed frame is the best I can find. I bought queen, king sizes before and there was no problem. However, the twin size is interesting. The short side is just half of the long plates. The plates are packed so that there is a weak section to resist moment, right in the middle of package. As a result, all the long plates cracked in the middle when I got the package. It looks terrible. Returning of a 91 lb package sounds not funny to me as well.I am an engineer and found that it can be solved by adding three supports under the middle of the bed frame. I put three book boxes there and it works! In short, there is problem for the Twin size frame package which let it very easy to cut all the long plates right in the middle. It could easily be solved by adjusting the package by the manufacture, not leaving weak joints in the middle of the package. If you don't have the habit of using comforter (or don't intend to buy one) then you shouldn't be buying this platform bed. If you only use fitted sheets, this would look horrible. My husband was very quick to jump to conclusions and thought it looks horrible. I put this bed right up against the wall, with a 3-4 inch gap. I also decided to spend $89 and got a beautiful 8 pc set bedding to go with it (including comforter, flat sheet, fitted sheet, pillows, etc...) With the slightly wider (than the mattress) platform, it was super easy for me to slide the mattress around in order to make the bed. If the platform had the same dimensions as the mattress itself, then I will definitely be finding it falling off all the time (when making the bed). The platform is designed like this for a reason.I have been using South Shore platform King bed for last 2 years in combination with a medium firm gel memoryfoam mattress and it was perfect. No issues with bed platform, it is way better than having a box frame for a little higher price. I decided to buy couple of twin beds of similar type for the children. So far they are loving it.I read some reviews about having issues with assembling it, but even for non-handyman like me, it was not a big deal at all. Just be cautious that the packaging box will be heavy and recommend to have two people to carry.Looks very nice we bought two for our 2 younger children. Very easy to put together took my husband no time at all however one of the boards were a little damaged during delivery but it is not noticeable for the price and fast delivery it came a week early so we are very happy with our purchase it is low to the ground toothis is the worst product ive ever purchased 1/2 the holes do not line ever even closely, the oles that do line up are over sized so i had to glue the fittings into place before i could even attempt to assemble this bed, this is a joke dont waste your money, honestly idk how they can sell a product like this without being sued this is plain out lazy and horrible quality controlGood quality. Very sturdy. Way too big for a twin mattress. Looks like absolute garbage with inch or more one each side showing bare particle board. Looks like ill have to trim the top boards to make it the priper size. Dissappointed. Ultimately a good sturdy frame though...
